What is Open Access Colonoscopy?
Open Access allows a patient or their referring physician to schedule a colonoscopy without initially having a gastrointestinal consultation. Open Access is ideal for healthy patients who need a routine colonoscopy and who have no serious medical conditions. Patients with medical issues are advised to meet with one of our providers for a consultation to ensure that performing a colonoscopy is a safe option.
Who is eligible for this procedure?
- A colonoscopy is recommended for healthy individuals over 50 years of age
- Healthy individuals over 40 years of age with a family history of colon cancer
- Any individual with a personal history of colon cancer or colon polyps
- Guidelines recommend regular screenings for African Americans by age 45
In offering our Open Access Colonoscopy Program we hope to encourage more patients to schedule a colonoscopy. Colon cancer is the second leading cause of death in both men and women and it is important to be proactive in early detection of this disease.
