What is a urologist?

Urology is the field of medicine that deals with the urinary tract, primarily, the kidney, ureters, urethra, and bladder. They also specialize in male reproductive and sexual health issues affecting the male reproductive organs. Common urologic conditions experienced by male patients include prostate cancer, kidney stones, erectile dysfunction, infertility and infertility. They often work in tandem with an internist, OB/GYN, pediatrician, or other medical professionals, depending on their specific condition.

Should I see a urologist?

While a primary care provider is usually all that is needed to clear up a urinary tract infection (UTI), often, patients need more specialized care. Urologic conditions are often diagnosed through biopsies, cystoscopies, prostate ultrasounds, urine tests, and digital rectal exams. These diagnostic procedures detect many urologic conditions and diseases, from urinary urgency to male sexual health concerns.

You should see a urologist promptly if you experience:

  • Blood in urine
  • Frequent urination
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Urine leakage
  • Weak urine flow
  • Low libido (men only)
  • Male infertility
  • A lump in the testicles
  • Pelvic floor disorders
  • Difficulty getting or maintaining an erection
  • Sexually transmitted infections/diseases (STI/STDs) in men
